Florianopolis – Day 1 – School, Blogging and the Beach
December 10, 2010
After a good night´s sleep we got up at around 9am. The kids didn´t want to get up and Iseline and Viktor sneaked down and stole a few more minutes by hiding in Adrian´s bed:

We went over to Dauro and Laura´s place to do schooling using their internet connection. Dauro was at work, but Laura was there with Miguel in the morning. Children go to school late here and end late. Miguel´s school day lasts from 1m to 6pm. That is why the kids here can stay up until midnight. A very different daily rhythm from what we are used to in Norway.
The kids worked well under Helene´s supervision while I caught up on some blogging. I was way behind.
We went back to our apartment at 6pm to have a look at the beach. The apartment is in a house at the end of a dead-end street. Our closest neighbor is the beach. This is what it looks like when you go out the door and turn left:

If you turn 180 degrees now, then you can see the house. We´re renting the half closest to the beach:

It´s the dark brown one, to the right. Turn back again and just continue for a while. Go on now.

See it? There it is.

Beach!

What happened to my legs?

It was very windy, so we didn´t stay long:

We invited our friends over to our place for dinner. The kitchen is pretty small, so we did kids first:

Helene claimed Dauro and I were both addicted:

Dauro and Laura had gotten us a Brazilian SIM-card so we could easily stay in touch. It was a prepaid card and cost 10 reals, about 6 USD. I was sure data would be outrageously expensive, so I checked the web site of the provider, TIM, before trying to read email over the 3G net. To my pleasant surprise TIM offers a special promotion in December and what must be the best data plan on the planet on their prepaid cards. This is a prepaid card, so there is no monthly fee. Data access costs half a real per day, unlimited usage. That´s 30 US cents for unlimited data per day. And 3G coverage is great here. No wonder I had to surf a little bit from time to time.
The kids played together in the garden before going to bed:

We could feel that they appreciated having other kids to play with and getting a bit of “normal” daily life again.
